The history behind Gloria

Built to train future officers of the Colombian navy, Gloria recalls the great sail training barque of the 1930s, though she was one of four barques built during the 1960s at the famous Astilleros y Talleres Celaya shipyard in Bilbao, Spain.

The concept of a training ship was promoted by three influential Colombian leaders: naval commander Admiral orlando Lemaitre, defense minister General Gabriel Rebeiz Pizarro; and project director Commander Benjamin Alzate Reyes. After her keel was laid in 1967, Gloria was completed in 1968. General Rebeiz died before the ship was christened, and a gracious tribute to his efforts, to insure that this important project reached completion, the vessel was named Gloria, for his wife, Gloria Zawadsky de Rebeiz.

Gloria carries a crew of ten officers, a proffesional crew of fifty, and a sixty to seventy-five cadets on her extensive training cruises in the north and south Atlantic.
